In these uncertain times, how can we stay positive and keep creating?
The Creative Industries Federation recently wrote to our new prime minister outlining their concerns for the future of the fastest growing UK sector and the impact on the economy should we leave the EU with a no-deal Brexit:
“As you know, the UK is known across the globe for its creativity. For its world-renowned music, performing arts and successes on screen. For the museums, galleries and heritage sites that each year welcome millions of tourists and locals alike. For the quality of its design and the skill of its craftspeople. For the globally competitive marketing and advertising industries, and for the individuality of world-leading sectors ranging from fashion to architecture to publishing and more.
At this vital time, we urge you to take advantage of the many opportunities to enable even more impressive success and global impact across the UK’s creative industries. “
Potential Damage of a no-deal Brexit
They go on to highlight the danger of a no-deal Brexit on the creative industries: “Alongside many other industries, we will continue to stress the extreme damage that would be caused by a no-deal Brexit. The free movement of goods, services, capital and people have underpinned the sector’s success, and we urge all the leaders of the UK’s political parties to support a second referendum rather than crash out of the EU.”
They are not alone in their concerns for the future. Last year the Mayor of London expressed his concerns over the loss of jobs in the capital:
- Mayor warns 6,000 jobs in London’s creative industries could be under threat from a no-deal hard Brexit
- Economic impact of worst-case no-deal hard Brexit on the capital’s creative sector could reach £1bn by 2030
- UK’s creative sector stands to lose up to £3.3bn and 27,000 jobs as a result of a no-deal Brexit
In uncertain times that threaten the industry we love, we wanted to highlight one of our superstar creative clients as well as some exciting new talent. In the face of Brexit, deal or no deal, let’s all do what we do best: Keep Calm and Keep Creating.

Daisie
[greybg]Actress Maisie Williams, best known for her role as Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, is the latest celeb to venture into tech entrepreneurship. In May this year she launched Daisie – “a playground for creative collaboration” with entrepreneur Dom Santry.
“Daisie is founded on the belief that pushing forward together, with a shared vision, is what sparks creativity and drives change. It’s our purpose to bring creators together and support them to do amazing work.
Daisie is where people find their people, get inspired, and make real progress together. It’s a new route into the creative world; through connections made organically and the natural development of skills. We’re solving the ‘messy middle’ in projects by providing creators with everything they need to make their ideas happen – nurturing fresh visions, incredible collaborations, total creativity, and a diverse and positive community. We’re about talent, not fame; success, not stardom. We’re about making it ’til you make it.”
Take a look at their platform, you may find an exciting new project to inspire you.
Sometimes all you need is a Starting Point
[greybg]Ever felt that creative urge to write, paint, make or draw something but as soon as you’re in front of the paper/canvas/computer screen you find yourself stuck, with no idea how to start? Well, London based designers and illustrators Ellie Rose and Niamh Power may have come up with the answer. Starting Point is a new concept to help stay creative by challenging their followers to complete specific tasks. Think Cards Against Humanity meets Daisie (above). They describe their project:
“We wanted to start doing more self-initiated projects but didn’t know where to start, so after a few pints we realised our problem could be solved if someone just gave us a starting point – then we thought, why don’t we provide the starting point?
Starting Point is a place where we come up with briefs for people to encourage new projects and get ideas flowing. We upload the briefs and share people’s responses to inspire and get new people involved.”
[greybg][/greybg]Their briefs are varied to make them inclusive of all types of creatives. Ellie & Niamh surround themselves with creative people who have strengths in different disciplines, and this has enabled them to collaborate and learn how to write inclusive briefs.
“We would love our project to reach more creatives as we want to see what people can do with a Starting Point.”
Check them out on Instagram and give one of their briefs a go.
